The Feldenkrais Method® is a holistic, embodied learning method that helps you increase body awareness, deepen consciousness and perceptual abilities, and learn freer ways of moving and functioning in everyday life. The method is based on somatic learning and the nervous system's ability to create new, more efficient movement patterns.
In class, we explore connections between different parts of the body, coordination, and movement quality. The work takes place primarily on the floor, lying down or sitting. The teacher verbally guides the movement sequences you perform at your own pace, guided by your sensations. Small, conscious movement explorations utilise the brain's plasticity, helping you move and function more lightly, more fully, and more efficiently.
The Feldenkrais Method® is widely used in rehabilitation, arts education, and sports, as well as a general practice for developing well-being and body awareness. The Feldenkrais Method® requires no special skills and is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.
Maria Nurmela is a dance artist, pedagogue, and certified Feldenkrais® teacher (Instituto Feldenkrais de Madrid/Lisbon, 2021–2025). She has worked as a professional dance artist since 2002, including at Tero Saarinen Company (2003–2017) and with her own often multidisciplinary works. Alongside her artistic work, Maria teaches people of different ages and backgrounds who want to deepen their relationship with movement and the body.
The four-year Feldenkrais certification (2021–2025) opened a new understanding of embodied wisdom for Maria and transformed her artistic practice. The focus shifted from performance to process. What fascinates Maria about the Feldenkrais Method® is the possibilities it opens for deepening somatic awareness, improving functional capacity, and artistic sensitivity.
