Dance artist Maria Nurmela and photographer-filmmaker Vesa Loikas have been collaborating on experimental short films since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. They have produced four short films so far, which have premiered at international festivals. The works have attracted attention with their unique visual and choreographic language, where strong imagery, movement, and corporeality merge into a web-like dramaturgy.

Maria invites the participants to dive into an adventure, where we approach the potential of bodies through various motions, movements, sensations and bodily states. During the course, we will question, through different improvisational and exploratory tasks, how we can find new ways to move and allow the motion that already exists in us to be augmented into unexpected amplitudes. Workshop is open for all levels!

Maria worked with the 1st and 4th year students of the Modern Dance Department of the Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory 16.4.-19.4.2024. On Friday 19th the students will have a showing in the Main Hall of the Campus of the themes and practices they researched during the four days workshop.

The Feldenkrais® method is a holistic somatic learning approach developed by Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), where gentle movement serves as a pathway to learning. The method offers participants the opportunity to fine-tune their senses, improve their bodily awareness and their relationship with their environment, learn new fine motor skills, and discover ease in everyday activities.

"Entanglement" is an interdisciplinary artistic project of the intricate connections between an oak forest, its trees, vegetation, animals and human beings. Using contemporary dance, moving images and sound design to better understand our place in the biosphere, dance artist Maria Nurmela, photographer/filmmaker Vesa Loikas and composer Jane Sheldon turn to the ancient oak grove in Kaarina Vaarniemi.

Maria, visual artists Saara Nurmi and performer Reettaleena Rauhala will lead a VoxFemina-workshop at the Joulukalenteri Festival 2023. The workshop will take place 11.12. in Turku Library at 4-6pm and 12.12.2023 at the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art. At 5.30 pm 12.12.2023 there will be a participatory open event at the entrance Hall of the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum (duration pro 30 minutes).

In the workshop, we will interact at multidisciplinary frontiers and open up our own voices through different stories, movements and metaphors.
The workshop will be led by dance artist-pedagogue Maria Nurmela and visual artist Saara Nurmi from the VoxFemina working group. The workshop will include a visit to the SALONG 3+ Renaissance exhibition at the museum.
