The Days is a lifetime journey into the history of a relationship. In collaboration with English choreographer Theo Clinkard, Maria Nurmela and Ville Oinonen have created a unique physical concept, a journey caught in an impossible loop of absurd and heartfelt exchanges of thoughts, which is about care, resilience and the desire for connection.
The Days invites the audience to share an encounter with two Finnish dancers Maria Nurmela and Ville Oinonen. At their invite, English choreographer and designer Theo Clinkard has conceived a work that asks them to become co-authors through a practice that has to be written anew at every performance. The collaboration resulted in engendering a world of ever-shifting negotiations, complex feelings and comic disconnection and constructed from a singular physical concept that sustains throughout the work. Caught in an impossible loop of absurd and heartfelt exchanges, the performer’s journey takes the form of a lifetime shared in this compelling performance about care, resilience and the desire for connection. Two local seniors are invited to participate in the performance after the workshop.
The Days Project started in 2017 on the initiative of Finnish dance artists Maria Nurmela and Ville Oinonen, who commissioned work they could perform together following prominent careers as freelance artists working internationally through collaborations with well-known dance makers and producing their own independent productions. Theo Clinkard has been making his own work for 15 years for his company and international commissions.
Since its premiere in 2018, The Days has toured internationally. It has proven to be a deeply resonant work for all kinds of audiences. It offers a compelling, poetic, and intimate encounter that entrusts the communicative power of the moving body.
