Maria Nurmela and Lisi Estaras, two experienced choreographer-dancers, join forces to celebrate the long and successful careers of mature female performers in the field of contemporary dance. Premiering in January 2025 at the Turku City Theatre's Sopukka, the production offers the Turku audience an evening of two solo pieces, appealing to those interested in contemporary dance, theater, performance and even stand-up. The evening delicately explores women’s life and the societal and social phenomena that shape it in a lively and compassionate manner.

Lisi Estaras's solo #THISISBEAUTY, which has premiered in 2022 and toured successfully across Europe, has been praised as a statement on the absence of middle-aged female performers from European contemporary dance stages. Maria Nurmela's solo, As You Like It, premiering at Sopukka, engages in dialogue with Estaras's #THISISBEAUTY, focusing on embodiment, contemporary dance, sound, spatiality, and autofictional texts from the life of a woman (Nurmela), loosely inspired by Shakespeare's play of the same name, serving as a dramaturgical framework. Nurmela creates this work together with Estaras.

This project adds significant value to the Turku dance scene, complementing the international program of the Regional Dance Center of Western Finland’s 20th-anniversary celebrations.

The project provides valuable continuing education for Turku-based dance enthusiasts and professionals, as Nurmela and Estaras will conduct workshops tailored for amateur and professional dancers alongside the performances.

Co-produced by the Regional Dance Center of Western Finland and Turku City Theatre. Supported by TOP-Foundation, Turku Theatre Foundation and Arts Promotion Center of Finland.
